If it weren't for your radiator, the engine at the heart of your Kia model would quickly overheat and then shut down. The radiator prevents that by circulating fluid -- most often a mixture of water and coolant -- through hoses to and from the engine.

How Kia Radiators Work

The radiator sends the fluid to the engine block through an inlet hose. The fluid then circulates through the engine, collecting building heat and keeping the moving parts cooled. Next, the fluid returns through outlet hoses back to the radiator, where the captured heat escapes harmlessly into the atmosphere via the radiator's large, flat, finned surface. Then the fluid can return to the engine to renew the process.

How to Spot Radiator Problems

It can cost $1,500 or more to replace a faulty radiator, and a new engine can run you several times that amount. That's why knowing the symptoms of radiator failure is important, since acting early can save you thousands of dollars. Signs of trouble include:

  • Red, green, or yellow liquid pooled under your vehicle
  • The temperature gauge runs higher than usual
  • You hear odd noises coming from the engine
  • You detect the syrupy sweet smell of coolant in the air
  • You have trouble maintaining a level cabin temperature
